If you love wine (and a little adventure,) Oregon’s Willamette Valley belongs at the top of your bucket list. This scenic region, stretching 150 miles from Portland to Eugene, is home to some of the best wineries in Oregon — where rolling vineyards, misty hills, and charming small towns create a wine country that’s every bit as inviting as it is world-class.
A Legacy Rooted in Passion and Pinot
The Willamette Valley’s winemaking story dates back to the 1960s, when a few daring dreamers planted Pinot Noir vines in what was then uncharted territory. They noticed the valley’s climate and soils had an uncanny resemblance to France’s Burgundy region — cool mornings, long summer days, and just enough rain to keep the vines happy.
Today, the region has earned a global reputation for exceptional Pinot Noir, with bottles that are elegant, expressive, and distinctly Oregon. But Pinot isn’t the only show-stopper here. The Chardonnay's from Willamette are crisp, complex, and beautifully balanced, allowing the fruit to express itself. I often encourage people who are ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) drinkers to try an Oregon Chardonnay, it is nothing like the heavy, buttery Chardonnay you might expect from California. You’ll also find delicious Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gamay, each showcasing the valley’s unique terroir.
So Many AVAs, So Much to Taste
While inspired by Burgundy, Willamette Valley has truly come into its own. The Willamette Valley is a designated American Viticultural Areas (AVA.) With over 700 wineries calling the Willamette Valley home, it became necessary to break it down into what we call sub-AVAs. The Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, Ribbon Ridge, Yamhill-Carlton (just to name a few) highlight the terroir unique to their location, offering a different personality and flavor profile to the wines grown and produced in their corner of the AVA. Exploring these diverse pockets is part of what makes Willamette Valley wine tours so fascinating.
Small-Town Charm, Big-Time Hospitality
What makes the Willamette Valley especially unforgettable isn’t just the wine — it’s the laid-back charm that flows through every tasting room and small town. Whether you’re wandering historic McMinnville, relaxing at a cozy inn, or chatting with winemakers over a glass of Pinot, you’ll feel the warm, unpretentious spirit that defines Oregon wine country.
The Best Time to Visit
For the ideal mix of (possible) sunshine and scenery, plan your trip between May through October. Summer brings vineyard picnics, music festivals, and patio tastings under blue skies. Harvest season (September-dOctober) is especially magical — grapes are being picked, the air is filled with rich aromas, and wineries are buzzing with excitement and anticipation.
